Message from the President of BBHM, 2015

October 2015 - It is with great pleasure that I can announce the newest organization of our local Bangladesh community here in Edmonton, Alberta, the Board of Bangladesh Heritage Museum (BBHM).

We have formed this organization with the aim, to further proceed with the preservation of our cultural roots and heritage of Bangladesh, and to unite our community over the historic events of Bangladesh Canadian people. We, and me personally included, hope that we will be able to establish a new home location, the Bangladesh Heritage Centre in cooperation with local Bangladesh community organizations, where we and others will be able to experience our heritage first hand, and where we will be granted access to research tools and knowledge about ourselves.

Our group of people carry a distinct cultural, professional and commercial identity, that expresses in our daily lives, as well as in art, literature, film and music. We are eager to present our diversity to a broader audience by displaying a unique, comprehensive collection of local heritage in the Bangladesh Heritage Museum, and by creating events like concerts, film screenings, and lectures.

On top of that we want to invite people all over the world with interest in our nation to come and visit the virtual museum pages (currently in preparation), as a free resource of Bangladesh history, heritage and culture.

From time to time we plan to explore specific topics in form of physical or virtual exhibitions, and to gather and bring together our community with people of other descent.

When you take a look at the front wall of the Waterloo Region Museum, you'll find a speech made by Canadian Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier in 1905, which greatly inspires me.

We do not want, that any individuals should forget the land of their origin or their ancestors. Let them look to the past, but let them also look to the future; let them look to the land of their ancestors, but let them look also to the land of their children.
Wilfrid Laurier, Prime Minister of Canada (1896–1911)

We can learn from that advice. Thinking of the future while moving ahead is an all-encompassing and continuous effort to provide information and resources as a measure for everyone's contribution. A method, that might help us with the much needed coordination of efforts amoung the community organizations to form and shape our community together.

I am looking forward in excitement, and want to express my heartfelt thank-you for all your support and contributions.

Delwar Jahid
President, Board of Bangladesh Heritage Museum (BBHM)
